Thanks for chatting with us! For newer fans, how did your passion for music and career come about? My career in music started when I was 14 years old as the host of a music video show called Video Control. I hosted the show for over a decade, which gave me an early start in the entertainment industry. From there, I earned a diploma in television broadcasting from Specs Howard School of Media Arts, and after that, I moved into radio. I hosted a show called Industry Revue in the Mix, which later grew into its own radio station, IRMIX Radio.
What was the best piece of advice you've ever been given about pursuing a career in music? The best advice I ever received was from CeCe Peniston, and I am paraphrasing here, it was to stay true to myself and never let outside opinions dictate my artistry. Music is personal, and the more authentic you are, the more people connect with it.
What song that you have recorded means the most to you and why? That’s a tough one because every song has its own meaning. But if I had to choose, Love Out Loud holds a special place in my heart. It represents self-acceptance and the courage to love freely, which is a message that will always be important to me.
What's the story behind your album's title, Phoenix Rising: The Emperor's Ascension? This album represents my personal and artistic rebirth. The phoenix symbolizes transformation, resilience, and emerging stronger after challenges. The Emperor’s Ascension reflects stepping into my power and embracing my identity without apology. This project is deeply personal, and I want listeners to experience that journey with me. It’s coming out in July 2025, and I can’t wait to share it.
Did you always want to be a musician, or was there a specific moment that made you think, "this is what I want to do with my life?" It was when my father passed away in 2013. I had always wanted to be an entertainer—those who’ve known me the longest outside of my family knew that. The way I used to dance and perform at Club Paradise in Lansing, it was a spectacle. People loved it. But eventually, life got in the way, and adult responsibilities took a front seat. When my father passed, I thought to myself, I want to go after everything I said I wanted for myself. Leaving no stone unturned. Right now, I’m doing everything I want to do on my own terms.
When/Where do you do your best writing? In the past, my best writing would come when I was supposed to be doing something else—especially when working for someone else. I always carry a notepad with me because inspiration can strike at any time. I also keep one beside my bed, just in case a dream sparks an idea for a song.
Where do you draw inspiration from when writing? Love—its highs, its lows, and everything in between—is a major influence on my songwriting. Life experiences, emotions, and personal growth shape my lyrics, but I also draw inspiration from the people around me. Sometimes, a simple conversation or a moment of reflection can turn into a song.
What is an example of a menu you would prepare if I came over? If you came over, I’d prepare a meal that’s both comforting and full of flavor. You might get a beautifully seasoned salmon or a juicy steak, paired with garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables. For dessert, maybe a rich chocolate lava cake or a fruit tart—something sweet to end the night perfectly.
Was there ever music playing in the kitchen growing up? Absolutely! Music was always playing in the kitchen. Whether it was classic soul, house, or R&B, it set the mood for cooking and made the whole experience more enjoyable.
What is your favorite dish to cook? I love cooking seafood, especially shrimp or salmon. There’s something about the versatility of seafood that makes it fun to experiment with different flavors and styles.
Favorite music to listen to while you cook? House music, Barbara Tucker to be specific, hands down. Her energy and rhythm keep me moving, and it makes cooking feel like a full experience rather than just a task.
If you could be sponsored by one food/drink brand, who would it be and why? Pepsi would be a strong choice because of their long history of collaborating with artists. Their brand has been deeply connected to music culture, and I appreciate the way they support creatives in the industry.
