HEJ, NEW YORK!

Ole & Steen is now open in New York City’s Union Square, marking the Danish bakery's first U.S. location and its 100th store opening. Founded in 1991 by bakers Ole Kristoffersen and Steen Skallebaek and originally called Lagkagehuset or “layer cake house,” Ole & Steen is a pioneer in the resurgence of artisanal and handcrafted baking practices in Denmark.

MADE WITH LOVE An international team of bakers introduces traditional Danish breads and pastries to New Yorkers, like Kløben buns with cardamon, marshmallow puffs coated in chocolate and nuts, Christanshavner tarts with strawberry mousse & fresh berries and the beloved cinnamon social, a long, convivial puff pastry ideal for slicing and sharing. Start the morning with a selection of coffee, juices and tea, alongside breakfast options like bircher and skyr yoghurt potshot Olander rolls with cured ham & gouda or rye & spelt porridge with beech mushrooms and a poached egg. An all-day menu from executive chef Derek Hunt offers open-faced sandwiches on carrot rye toast with smoked salmon, blackcurrant herring or Yukon potatoes, seasonal salads with grains and heartier dishes like spicy butterbean stew, herb-roasted salmon and braised brandt beef. All options can be made to-go, while those looking to stay can relax over a glass of wine, bubbles or Mikkeller beer.

MODERN HYGGE Located in a landmarked building originally constructed in 1900, Ole & Steen’s flagship New York location is outfitted in sleek Danish style, with Jura grey stone countertops and blackened brass accents. With the combination of warm, welcoming staff, soft lighting and communal gathering tables, the two-floor bakery provides a cozy space to convene from the morning through the evening, while taking in the modern sense of Danish hygge and hospitality.
