Jamie Lin Wilson has a knack for detail-oriented storytelling, picking up on the smallest pieces of what makes people and situations memorable. This time, she’s focusing on “Alice,” a character reminiscent of the Southern ladies we all know -- and find endlessly entertaining thanks to their life lessons including, but not limited to, how to keep a possum out of a persimmon tree. Her new single premiered today with Wide Open Country, and will be widely available on all platforms beginning Friday. Wilson has also been added to the lineup for this year’s AmericanaFest, with an official showcase set for Tuesday, September 10.
Inspired by a neighbor who lived near her childhood home in Southeast Texas, Wilson first encountered Alice as she was walking to get her mail one day -- dressed in full polyester. After insisting she give her a ride home, Wilson learned more about a few life lessons that only come with age.
“I sat and visited with Alice for about 3 hours,” she told the outlet. “I was 19. She was in her 90’s. About ten years later, my friend Kelley Mickwee and I were writing with John Hadley, and I started talking about this feisty old lady I met one time… so, here’s a true story about a real old lady named Alice, from the point of view of a real young lady - me.”
“Alice” is the follow up to last year’s Jumping Over Rocks, which finds Wilson narrating a rich collection of story songs that encompass universal themes but remain specific and personal, too. The album climbed to #13 on the Americana Albums Chart, while “The Being Gone” reached #26 on the Americana Singles Chart. It received acclaim from Billboard, Paste, American Songwriter, No Depression, PopMatters, Parade, Rolling Stone Country, Wide Open Country, and Cowboys & Indians.
After receiving an acoustic guitar for Christmas when she was 19, Wilson began attending open mics in College Station, Texas, and was immediately welcomed into what was primarily a boys’ club of aspiring pickers. There, she met fellow bandmate Shane Walker -- a precursor to her time with The Gougers. She would eventually also co-front The Trishas, as well -- the opposite of a boys’ club, noted for their impeccable harmonies.
