Congrats on your album, Sticks and Stones, and the debut of the new video! How does it reflect where you are in your life?
It just tells the stories of what I have been through, or what someone I know has been through. I write about things that I feel strongly about. I am in the place now here I am strong and I am not the person that I used to be. It tells the story of past relationships that have gone wrong and I have just learned so many things along the way. It is great sharing my story.
You are originally from the UK, but have been in Nashville four years. How has Nashville influenced your music? Have you seen a change since being here?
Yes definitely. I wrote a lot before I came here. But when I came to Nashville, I kind of felt like I knew nothing. I had to start right at the beginning. I just feel like it was a blank canvas for me.
What was it liking filming the video for “Sticks and Stones?”
It was awesome. We did the video at SIR studios with my entire band. We shot the video as a live show. It was a lot of fun and easy. It was a very laid back day.
How did you know when you had the right songs?
I kind of didn’t. It was a hard process. I had a lot of songs and did a lot of writing here with a lot of cool people. It was hard just picking five. I had to narrow it down and try to get a good mixture of songs to have a good balance.
Are there any songs that didn’t make the album that you now wish you included?
Yes, there are probably a few! But I can always record them later on. It is always good to have some in your pocket.
What are some of your favorite Nashville restaurants?
My favorite restaurant for dessert is J. Alexanders. Their carrot cake is actually the reason I moved here. Yep, I am just here for the carrot cake. It is amazing and changes your life!
You are the absolute cutest! We just love your style! Any favorite Nashville shops?
I love Target! I am a very frequent shopper at Target. I probably keep them in business. I also love going to Opry Mills mall. I do not get to go as often as I’d like, but I love Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, and H&M. I actually really miss the shops back home though. My favorite store was called River Island. It is a huge British chain. My whole wardrobe use to be River Island. But I have found great stores here to like Blush, they are amazing.
Is there anything you wished would come back into fashion?
I would say flares but they are coming back into style already. It is so funny because I see old pictures of my mom when she was my age and I think, why didn’t you save that, why don’t you have that now, and she can’t find it anywhere. I would totally wear her old clothes. They are so so cool. One thing I hope they don't bring back though is the shoulder pads. That would not be a good look for me. We can leave that one back in the 80s.
How many pairs of shoes do you own?
Oh my gosh, you do not want to ask that question. I have a lot. I hope that my mom can read this cause back home I have a room full of clothes still. If I buy some new shoes my mom is terrible with me. She says I have so many shoes there. But they are like 4,000 miles away. I need some here to. Shoes and bags are for sure my downfall.
What celebrity would you like to meet at Starbucks for a cup of coffee?
Shania Twain. I would love to bump into her or Trisha Yearwood. I just think she is so genuine and a really nice person. Oh and Dolly Parton, just to name a few.
Any last words for our readers and your fans? How do they connect with you?
Check out the video and EP. I hope that everybody likes it. Website: https://www.sarahlawton.com/
