You just released released your new single, “Everything In It,” yesterday! Congrats! Can you give us a little background on the song?
This song has been a long time coming honestly. It is very personal. It is about a break up I went through. I am from a small town in Virginia and small town breakups are always hard. Anyone can kind of relate to this song. It’s about those places you used to love to go because you were with that special person, and then when you breakup they remind you of things differently so you don't want to pass that certain place. It is probably one of my favorite songs I have ever written as a songwriter.
You performed Sunday on the CMA Spotlight Stage inside Fan Fair X hall, and like performing here at Piranhas, it will be an intimate gathering — on tour you’ve played some big festivals — what do you like about those different settings?
This is my first time doing an official CMA stage. Totally a dream come true. I have been such a fan of this festival and everything it represents. It is so much harder to sing for people when you can really see their faces. If it’s thousands of people, everyone just blends in. But when you have to sing in the smaller places, especially here in Nashville like at the songwriter rounds, you can see everybody in the room. There might only be twenty people in there. So that can be a little more nerve racking. You can really tell if people are interested in you or not and you can see them on their phones or not paying attention. That’s what makes singing for smaller settings so much harder.
Coming from a small town and now in Nashville, how has being here influenced your music?
Nashville is such a great community of different genres. I have a ton of friends in the Indie/pop world, so it is awesome to be able to go to their shows in East. It is such a melting pot so I feel like I am getting influences from everybody. My small town where I grew up was pretty much just country music. So you were not really exposed to a lot of other things.
Who were some of your favorite artist growing up?
Shania Twain was number one because she's amazing and had dark hair like me. Reba was obviously a huge influence career wise and Garth as just a pure entertainer. I was just fascinated by him.
Of course we love your style, any favorite Nashville shops?
I am a boutique shopper. There is a store called Dress Up that I really love and I also love to find just random stores honestly. But I am also a cheap-o haha and do not like to spend a lot of money. I spend more money on jewelry probably, and shoes.
Is there anything you wished would come back into fashion?
I am so obsessed with the high waisted stuff right now. It just looks so good whether it's bathing suits or shorts. So I am really excited that is back and I hope it stays around.
How many pairs of shoes do you own?
It is close to maybe 100. Everywhere I have lived has always had a walk-in closet. I think God just knew I had too many shoes and knew I needed a closet to keep them.
If someone is coming to Nashville for the first time, where do you take them?
Broadway of course. Everybody that comes to visit should experience that. I feel like that is our Hollywood Boulevard. It is such an experience. I love Centennial park to. That's one of my places to just walk around. They have little festivals all the time.
What are some of your favorite Nashville restaurants?
It is interesting because I am vegetarian. Slowing trying to become vegan. I am just having a hard time with the cheese situation. It is really hard to give up cheese. So there are some awesome places in East Nashville that I go to a lot like Wild Cow, they have really good nachos, and Graze is really yummy. It is right near Five Daughters Bakery so you can stop in and get a donut.
Say you were having a dinner party. What is your favorite food to cook for your friends?
I am really getting into cooking more vegan meals and I make a really good lasagna and a really good lentil curry. I really love Thai food.
Where do you grocery shop?
I really go to a mix of places, but mostly between Kroger and Whole Foods. Whole Foods has the good specialty items, but I am usually just a Kroger girl because it is just right down the street so it is easy to get to.
Finally, if you could be sponsored by one food/drink brand who would it be and why?
I love tea. So Milo’s tea! And also Pirate's Booty popcorn! It is a perfect mix of a popcorn and Cheetos. I can go through an entire bag in a day.
