Artist's Talk Best Burgers in Honor of National Burger Day!

Shelby Lee Lowe

"The Lowe Burger! The Lowe Burger is a family recipe that my grandmother used to cook at the restaurant she owned at one time. To make a Lowe Burger you use one pound of ground beef, one egg, 4 tablespoons of flour, Worchester sauce, and salt and pepper to make one delicious burger. It tastes great with a side of fried-taters."

If it’s late night and the cravings hit, there is only one place I’m headed to. Dino’s. It hails as the oldest dive bar on the East Side and it does not disappoint.Sip on a tecate and order yourself a Dino’s Classic Cheeseburger and fries and make sure to get it animal style!

I always stop in Owensboro, KY for a burger at Wyndall’s Wonder Whip

I'm a burger freak, I love cheeseburgers and every place in Nashville has great burgers. Obviously The Pharmacy is on the list, Burger Republic is on the list, Corner Pub has a killer burger. I hate that they closed the Midtown location but they have a bunch of other ones.

Which burger at Corner Pub is your favorite? Oh, the Black and Bleu! I definitely have to go with that one!

Blue cheese burger: Get yourself some really good, grass fed ground beef and turn them into patties. Throw them on the grill and add some blue cheese on top, melt it, and you are set. Dress it up however you like - I prefer lettuce, tomato, pickled onion, pickled jalepenos, pickles, and some Frank's buffalo sauce. I usually go no bun, but if you go with a bun, make sure it is high-quality. A bad bun can ruin a great burger. Words of wisdom, right there.

LUCY ANGEL - Juicy Blue Bacon Burger

We love bison because it’s delicious and it’s also leaner than chicken (or so we’ve been told???). Our Mom Kate is a firm believers that blue cheese makes everything taste better so we went with it!!

INGREDIENTS - Makes 4 burgers

  • 2/3 cup blue cheese crumbles

  • 2 pounds freshly ground bison meat

  • 4 slices of cooked bacon

  • 3 teaspoons Special Spice Mixture

  • 4 hamburger buns

  • 4 leaves iceberg lettuce

  • 4 slices vine-ripened tomatoes

  • 1 red onion

Ok now this seasoning is our Lucy Angel interpretation/rip-off/ of Martha Stewarts knock off of Ted’s Montanan Grill’s burger so yeah it’s pretty darn good:)

Special Seasoning Mixture

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons coarse salt

  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt

  • 1 teaspoon onion salt

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic salt

  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS

1.Preheat griddle/cast iron(pick me!!)/easy-bake oven to medium-high, DO NOT USE an easy bake oven!!! In a large bowl mix together bison and blue cheese crumbles taking care not to overwork the bison. Make 4 equal-size hamburger patties from the ground bison meat. Take it easy on the patties.

2. Season both sides of each patty with 1/4 teaspoon of Special Spice Mixture, and place on griddle. Cover burgers with stainless steel bowl or other heat-proof, dome-shape object, and cook for 6 minutes. Turn the burgers over, and season the top of each burger again with 1/4 teaspoon of the spice mixture. Cover with the dome and continue to cook for 4 to 5 minutes, for medium.

3. Add mayonnaise to buns and toast slightly on the griddle. Serve each burger with lettuce, tomato, bacon, red onion and whatever else you like!!
